Cub’s Construction Birthday Party

March 25, 2014 in Kids / Lifestyle

It has been almost two months (oops!!) since we celebrated the cub’s birthday. Better get this post out before it’s time to celebrate the dragonlady’s. 😉

For his 3rd birthday, I let the cub decide on the party theme he wanted. He gets excited whenever we go past a construction site, or when he sees a digger (aka excavator) or big trucks on the road. So it was hardly a surprise he wanted a construction-themed party this year. I was pleased with the choice as party materials for this theme should be easier to source!

Our new home was still work-in-progress then, but the facilities are ready for use. With a stroke of luck, I managed to book the function room and decide to hold the construction party at our new place! This worked out well as I had some ideas that may not have worked in the usual kids’ party venues.

The husb was away most of the time in the last few months of 2013 and we were busy with the renovations whenever he was back. To preserve my sanity and earn more sleep for myself, I decided to outsource most of the party preparations to a party planner this time.

I had a good impression of Party with Eva after we rented some party stuff from them for the dragonlady’s Sweet Treats Party last year. After getting more positive reviews from Angie for Dana’s party, I decided to have them do the cub’s Construction Party as well.

Party is all about playing and toys for kids around the cub’s age. So toys are a must! After much Pinterest-ing while doing my research on party ideas, I wanted to get construction vehicles in for the cub. He’s rather infatuated with the excavator, so I had the idea of getting a mini-excavator in for him to dig into some sand!

Seems like only Toys for Rent had these construction vehicles for rental. I was hesitant because I didn’t have a good experience with them when I enquired last year. Thankfully, the response was much quicker and more pleasant this time round. So I got these vehicles:

and a sand table for the even-younger kids:

As we had expected the cub to recover from HFMD only days before his party, our guest list shrank (which I totally understand!!). In a way, it worked out well too cos there were only 4 of the construction vehicles and they were all popular among the kids! This size of a party meant that I could have more decent conversations with our guests as well.

Many thanks to all who came!

A drop in numbers did mean some challenges with the food catering options.

Fortunately, my creative baker could improvise and came up with a great design with lesser cake!

We ordered pizzas instead as it was harder to get the usual catering menus with the number of guests and many had commenced on their Chinese New Year menus.

Birthday Boy was pleased with the choice of food catering nonetheless!

All grown up – can cut the cake (almost) on his own!

Since it was almost Chinese New Year, I HAD to throw in some yu-sheng to lohei!
(Okay, this was really for me!)

This is a popular theme for the boys. Around the same time, there were three construction parties for the 3yos in my social media circle! Pretty sure your boy will love it too!
