{Review+Giveaway} “Today I am” by Mies van Hout

August 8, 2013 in Uncategorized

About a week ago, I opened up the package from Fish Book Co. and revealed a new book to the cub. Usually, he would flip through his new book (and probably tear some pages in the process) and go, “mommy, read!”  And when I’m halfway through the book, he’d be distracted by some other toy or go look for his dad.

However this time round, I was in for a surprise. For some reason, the cub is deeply interested in this book he affectionately calls “Fish Book”. How apt! He looked through the illustrations and tried to read the words or emotions on the fishes. I was beaming to the husb when the cub could show me his look of “sad” and “angry” at the correct pages that displayed those emotions!!

We went through the book together. I would read out the word that describes the emotion on the fish and do a version of my own that’s somewhat similar but slightly more exaggerated (kids love exaggerated effects!) to the illustrations to show him. Our favourite is “SHOCKED” which I showed him wide-opened-eyes and jaw-dropping-ahhh. I love how he could imitate me immediately after I showed him a shocked face. So nowadays we keep giving each other a SHOCKED face. Hilarious, I tell ya!

When I tried to explain “brave”, he told me “dark dark, not scared”. It was an illustration of a small fish swimming in a sea of darkness. I was most impressed at how he could get that from the drawing! Now when the cub gives me his usual “scared scared, I’m scared” nonsense, I will tell him to be brave like the little fish in the book and he would nod his head.

There are 20 common emotions illustrated inside this book. I really like how helpful these illustrations help the kids to express and be aware of their emotions, and for us to explain some of the emotions better. Example, I use “furious” to explain how upset his Dad is at having to wake up twice in the middle of the night to convince him not to drink milk.

The cub has been asking for his book every now and then for the past week. Whenever he flips through the pages on his own, I would see him trying to come up with different expressions to match with the emotions illustrated on the pages. That really put a smile to our faces and made us feel the pride of a parent!

In the spirit of good things must share, here are some information about the cub’s Fish Book and a giveaway for readers of this blog.

At the moment, my daughter really likes the Llama Llama series by Anna Dewdney. Her favourite book of the series is Llama Llama, time to share. She loves to tell the story of fuzzy Llama’s arm being pulled off as the characters fight for the soft toy.
