Absence makes the heart grow fonder (of home)

July 27, 2013 in Uncategorized

Like I’ve mentioned, nothing like time spent overseas to appreciate my little country more.

It was a scorching summer holiday we had in Switzerland and UK. I could feel and see my skin shriveling and growing wrinkles every day! Oh, how I miss the humidity here in Singapore.

Thankgod I bought some supplies at DFS at departure which came in handy when we were there.

People ought to stop complaining so much about our MRT. True that the rides are not as comfortable as before but the hardware is old after all. Overcrowding gets to me as well but honestly, it’s pretty much the same situation in all developed cities around the world. At least we have aircon in our trains, escalators and lifts at all our stations!

We were baking inside the crowded underground tube with no aircon and lots of dust to inhale since the windows were all open during summer.

We climbed some crazy number of stairs with the stroller at various tube stations as well. Thankfully we had more hands to help us out.

Switzerland is known to be expensive. But I wasn’t quite willing to pay almost S$20 for a Burger King meal. Thankfully we brought our stash of cup noodles and saved on one meal at least! Hurhurhur.

Between my brother and us, we brought enough cup noodles to feed the entire entourage!

Our standard of living may have gone up here, but at least I can get an upsized meal at McDonald’s for about S$6? Not to mention, the availability of our very yummy and extremely affordable hawker fare!

UK is much more liveable in comparison to Switzerland. But still, you can only find food at any time of the day and night in Singapore. Good food anytime! One of the nights, we returned to our apartment at London around midnight after a long day out and discovered all the makan places we wanted to get takeaways or get delivery over were closed. Fortunately, the husb’s uncle was able to conjure up some food using whatever leftover ingredients he could find from the fridge.

Reasons to love my country more aside, these cities do have lots to offer that make all that traveling worthwhile. Shall share more in upcoming posts.

Totally agree with what you said. Life is really so much more convenient in SG. There really should be more thankfulness and less complaints.

I’m mostly thankful for what we get here in Singapore. But I must add, $6 for one ERP gantry is hard to swallow. And our stretch has a few gantries! You are coming back to premium land when you get home. 😉
