our first family photoshoot

Who
Last weekend, we did a photoshoot with our newly minted family-of-four with Steph Tan. A couple of months ago, I was scouring websites for photographers who do mostly maternity, family and lifestyle shoots and chanced upon her site. There were a few others that I shortlisted but I like how she do many of her shoots outdoor. I know..how odd is it for someone who’s not outdoor-ish at all to want to take photos in the outdoors?! But I realize that photos taken outdoors have very lovely colors and was quite set on having an outdoor photoshoot for us unless the weather does not hold up on the actual day.

WhenΒ
I wanted to do the photoshoot as soon as my confinement ended because Teanne is not going to look very newborn if I delay any further. I was very relieved that I wasn’t looking as bloated as I was with my first childbirth at 5 weeks post-birth. Else, it would be really demoralizing for me every time I look at the photos from our first family photoshoot!

Where
Instead of the beach which would require much cleaning up after for all of us, we decided on a garden backdrop at Jacob Ballas Children Garden instead.

What (to wear)
Once venue was confirmed, what to wear was the next consideration. Initially, I wanted the whole family to be color coordinated as I discovered all 3 of us – Thaddeus, the husb and myself have white pants and tops that are of floral/leaves print. An awesome coincidence which would have been perfect if mine was not in pink. Thaddeus’ and the husb’s shirts are in light blue/green. We had not much time to do shopping and it’s always easier to get clothes for babies. Hence, we decided to go 2:2 – Thaddeus will match with his Daddy, while Teanne will match with her Mommy. Got a pink leaf-print top and white bottom for Teanne from trusty Mothercare and we were set! I thought the combination turned out great because we were coordinated in prints and matched with the background, and most of the time, Teanne was with me while Thaddeus was with the husb.

What (time to shoot)
The 2-hour photoshoot was scheduled at 8am, which works out really well for us. For one, Thaddeus is an early bird and is in a better mood in the morning. The husb can last longer without looking like he’s drenched in perspiration since the sun is not so hot. The big plus would be that the garden is not very crowded yet..until about 9ish.

How
I knew we would need an extra pair of hands with our overactive toddler. Someone whom Thaddeus needs no warming up to and can play with, someone to watch our stuff when needed, someone who knows how to take some behind-the-scene shots. Best person? My youngest brother, Nic! It was my best decision for the day because I forgot we needed someone to distract Thaddeus or attract his attention at appropriate times too!

For props, I brought along a personalized burp cloth for Teanne that was gifted to us by lovely girlfriends. The husb made his best decision for the day to buy some bubbles solution on top of balloons. As it turned out, Thaddeus became more fascinated with the bubbles than balloons! And the bubbles created some nice effects for our photos too! Of course, this could only be possible with the help of our extra hands. πŸ˜‰

It took lots of playing, running, jumping around and mad waving to get our son into his playful cheeky mood for the shoot. That, my husb and brother can do. But when it comes to getting a newborn to take photos, I was glad we had an experienced photographer who is a mother of two girls. Steph was fantastic with Teanne! She knew how to soothe Teanne when she was starting to be fussy and was not afraid to get her hands dirty with poop/pee. I, on the other hand, was a little flustered when I had to clean Teanne’s poopy bum in the midst of our shoot.

Thankfully, all went well for the shoot. And here are some of my favourite moments:

These are such lively pics! Good thinking, bringing along your bro to help make Thad smile!. We also did our shoot recently and didn't bring any extra help. So Naomi looked rather grumpy in the earlier shots till we figured out how to make her smile.

he was really of great help – offering to take more shots, helping the photographer create more bubbles, etc.

next time we must remember, first on the list is to get a pair of extra hands to help us!

i hope to do the next one when Teanne is more interactive. as a newborn, she looks like an accessory in our arms in most photos. haha!
